Earthquakes in West Java, Indonesia

Overview

On October 15, 2026, a series of shallow tectonic earthquakes struck the Sukabumi and Bogor regions of West Java. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) attributed the tremors to active fault activity. The sequence included a magnitude 3.5 earthquake centered north of Sukabumi at a depth of 9 km, followed by a magnitude 4.1 earthquake located southwest of Bogor at a depth of 5 km.

Local disaster management agency (BPBD) reports indicate that the seismic activity caused structural damage to 253 houses and five places of worship. The damage was concentrated in the villages of Cibunian, Purwabakti, and Purasari within the Pamijahan and Leuwiliang districts. Reported residential damage included 222 houses with light damage, 25 with moderate damage, and 6 with heavy damage.

One resident sustained minor injuries and received medical treatment. Following the main tremors, BMKG recorded at least 11 aftershocks ranging from magnitude 1.6 to 2.6 and continues to monitor the area.
