Overview

South Sudan and parts of East Africa are facing escalating food insecurity and humanitarian crises. In South Sudan, the situation was characterized by imminent famine threats as food supplies were projected to run out by September 2026. This crisis was driven by internal power struggles, reduced international funding, and refugee influxes, leaving approximately 2.2 million children suffering from acute malnutrition.

By early September, the crisis expanded to include regional climate instability. In Uganda’s Karamoja region, drought has led to approximately 32 percent of the population experiencing Crisis or Emergency levels of hunger. Simultaneously, South Sudan’s food security has been further compromised by unpredictable rainfall and prolonged drought, threatening the nation’s rain-fed agriculture and pastoralism. While some food assistance has been deployed, experts and local leaders are calling for increased climate resilience and long-term structural investments to address these recurring vulnerabilities.
