East African energy infrastructure development
Overview
Regional governments are initiating large scale energy projects to expand electricity access and modernize infrastructure.
In Burundi, the government signed a 25 year, $1.4 billion public-private partnership with Weza Power, a subsidiary of the US-based Anzana Electric Group. This project aims to upgrade 52,000 kilometers of distribution lines to increase the national electrification rate from 12% to 70%. The investment is intended to support industrial and mining sectors, including the processing of nickel, gold, tin, and rare earth elements.
In Uganda, the government and the African Development Bank launched the National Energy Pact. This initiative seeks to mobilize $17.7 billion in investments by 2030 to connect 85% of the population to electricity and provide clean cooking solutions to 50% of residents. The plan involves developing significant operational capacity and constructing over 2,700 mini-grids.
