East African national student assessments
Overview
In early October 2026, Tanzania and Kenya prepared for large-scale national student assessments. In Tanzania and Zanzibar, over 4.2 million students registered for Grade 2, Grade 4, and Form 2 assessments, with various schedules spanning early to mid-October.
In Kenya, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced that more than 3.6 million students would participate in examinations, including the KPSEA, KJSEA, and KCSE. To combat cheating, the Kenyan government increased the number of examination material storage containers to 701 nationwide and implemented measures to mitigate the impact of El Niño rains.
Following the launch of the examination season, the Kenyan Ministry of Education emphasized collaboration with security and intelligence agencies to prevent malpractice. The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) introduced enhanced security technology, such as smart padlocks on examination containers that allow for remote monitoring, a system being rolled out nationwide following successful tests in 250 schools.
