Overview
In late July 2026, Moldova inaugurated a 16.6‑km bypass on the M3 road near Slobozia Mare and Giurgiulești. Funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the project adds two carriageways, numerous bridges and access roads, and is expected to divert heavy‑tonnage traffic away from town centres, cutting travel time by about ten minutes and improving access to the Giurgiulești–Galați border crossing.
A week later, Romania announced temporary closures and restrictions on two key routes. The Bacău bypass of the A7 motorway will be fully closed from 17 to 31 August for connection works on the Focșani‑Bacău and Bacău‑Pașcani segments, diverting traffic onto DN 2. Simultaneously, the A1 highway between Sebeș and Sibiu imposed limited traffic flow while a new asphalt surface is laid. Both countries’ actions illustrate a broader pattern of ongoing road‑network upgrades in the region, balancing new capacity with short‑term disruptions.
