Eurostat confirmed that the euro‑zone unemployment rate held at 6.3 % in June 2026, unchanged from May and from a year earlier. The EU unemployment rate remained steady at 6.0 %, representing roughly 13.3 million unemployed people, of whom 11.1 million are in the euro‑zone. Compared with May, unemployment rose by about 79 000 in the EU and 71 000 in the euro‑zone.
Youth unemployment in the EU edged up to 15.5 % (down to 14.8 % in the euro‑zone), while female unemployment fell slightly to 6.1 % EU‑wide and stayed at 6.4 % in the euro‑zone; male unemployment was 5.9 % EU and 6.2 % euro‑zone. The highest national rates were recorded in Finland (10.5 %) and Spain (10.1 %).
Eastern European members continued to post the lowest jobless rates, with Bulgaria and Cyprus at about 3 % and the Czech Republic near 2.9 %, well below the EU average of roughly 5.9 %. The World Happiness Report still notes improving well‑being in the region.
Eurostat’s release on 29 July 2026 reiterated these figures, confirming the stability of the overall rates and the slight month‑to‑month rise in EU youth unemployment to 15.5 %.
A separate development noted a fall in Brazil’s unemployment to 5.4 % in Q2 2026, but this remains outside the European focus of the narrative.
