Eastern European infrastructure and border security tensions

Tensions in Eastern Europe have escalated due to hybrid warfare and strategic strikes on critical infrastructure. In Lithuania, authorities identified 12 tunnels used by migrants to bypass border fences from Belarus. Officials, including State Border Guard Service Commander Rustamas Liubajevas, indicated these operations likely receive logistical support from Belarusian authorities to maintain border tensions.

In Ukraine, Russian forces targeted the Maiaki road bridge on the M-15 Odesa–Reni route, a vital link for goods moving toward Moldova and Romania. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) noted this may be a strategic attempt to disrupt land-based grain exports following reduced maritime capacity in the Black Sea.

Military experts have warned that Russian forces may shift focus toward targeting critical bottlenecks in Ukrainian logistics, specifically border crossings. Unlike physical infrastructure like bridges, border crossings involve complex customs and communication systems. Systematic attacks on these points, particularly routes through Moldova and Romania that connect Ukraine to the European transport network, could cause cumulative delays, increased costs, and reduced predictability for the delivery of military supplies such as ammunition, equipment, and fuel.
