Ebola outbreak in Central Africa

Overview

An Ebola outbreak involving the Bundibugyo strain was officially declared in the Haut-Uélé province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo on July 10, 2026. Efforts to manage the epidemic have faced challenges due to security concerns and community resistance to medical responses.

As the virus spread from the Ituri province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Uganda, regional health concerns intensified. While Uganda has since cleared the virus following approximately 20 reported cases, the risk of spillover remains. In response, South Sudan has established a high-level national task force in Juba to enhance surveillance and border monitoring to prevent importation of the virus.
