Ebro River water management disputes

Overview

The Ebro Hydrographic Confederation (CHE) has rejected a proposal to ‘optimize’ the ecological flow at the mouth of the Ebro River. The rejection occurred during the Water Council of the Ebro Hydrographic Basin in Zaragoza, where the CHE stated that the ‘necessary support’ to protect the ecological flow from gaps and shallows had not been obtained.

In addition to the flow rejection, the CHE announced that studies will be conducted to review the ecological flow of the Montsant River at the Margalef dam. The Scheme of Important Issues (ETI) report, which precedes the draft hydrological plan, was presented following the processing of 166 allegations. The report also noted sectoral concerns regarding the economic impact of new European directives on water consumption, purification, and supply protection perimeters.

A public consultation on the draft Hydrological Plan Project for the Ebro Hydrographic Basin is expected to begin on November 27.
