Eching-Urubamba climate partnership termination
Overview
The Eching municipal council voted to terminate its climate partnership with the province of Urubamba, Peru. The decision was passed with a 13:8 majority, effectively ending a cooperation that had been officially established in March 2026 as part of the ‘Municipalities in One World’ program. This initiative was intended to build upon a town twinning relationship that has existed since 1994.
Proponents of the termination, including members of the Free Voters, argued that the municipality receives no clear benefit from the partnership and stated that local government is not responsible for development aid. They also cited a lack of agricultural overlap between the regions and concerns regarding corruption in Peru.
The decision also includes the cancellation of a planned return visit. The Green Party criticized the move, contending that the partnership provided essential opportunities for knowledge exchange concerning biodiversity, sustainable agriculture, and water management in response to climate change.
