Overview

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has released a report titled ‘Ruptures and opportunities: proposals for Latin America and the Caribbean to prosper in the new geopolitical era’ to address shifting global dynamics.

Initially presented at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the report urged the region to diversify international alliances to navigate competition between the United States, China, and the European Union. Experts emphasized that the region must avoid rigid alignments as major powers implement strategies to secure access to Latin American resources, digital infrastructure, and supply chains.

Subsequent updates noted that the eight geopolitical ruptures identified in the report have become palpable realities. While the region possesses significant natural assets, including 40% of global biodiversity and over 30% of freshwater reserves, it currently accounts for only 8% of global investment in research and development.
