Economic empowerment initiatives in Querétaro

Overview

In Querétaro, local initiatives are focusing on fostering economic and professional autonomy for vulnerable populations.

Initially, the Querétaro Empowerment Center for Women celebrated the graduation of over 500 women from its third generation of certification programs. These programs, organized by the Secretariat of Women, include training in employability, entrepreneurship, and autonomy. The center has reportedly served more than 16,000 women since its inception one year ago.

Building on these efforts toward economic independence, the Querétaro Labor Ministry launched the 2026 Self-Employment Equipment program. This initiative involves a 3.7 million peso investment to provide machinery and tools to 247 entrepreneurs across 18 municipalities. The program specifically targets women, senior citizens, and people with disabilities to help them transform skills into sustainable income through 150 productive projects in trades such as carpentry, sewing, catering, and physiotherapy.

Parallel social development efforts include the ‘Contigo Sanamente’ program, which has provided mental health services to over 400,000 adolescents and young people since 2022, and the ‘Listos a Jugar’ initiative, a collaboration with Sesame Workshop reaching over 18,000 preschool children to promote socio-emotional skills. Additionally, the Querétaro Congress approved a reform to the State Tourism Law intended to promote community-based tourism and ensure economic benefits reach local families directly.
