Economic hardship in Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory
Overview
Residents and civil servants in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are experiencing intensifying economic hardship driven by rising costs for fuel, transportation, and food.
Initial reports focused on the financial strain placed on civil servants as petrol prices rose from a range of N1,180–N1,350 to between N1,388 and N1,450 per litre. This increase led to higher daily commuting fares, forcing workers to divert funds from food and household necessities to cover transportation. Some employees reported that the hike impacted office productivity and led some to abandon private vehicle use in favor of public transport.
As the situation progressed, the economic pressure expanded to include significant inflation in food staples. Prices for essential goods such as rice, beans, cooking oil, sugar, and eggs have risen substantially. The cost of a 50kg bag of rice has reached between N68,000 and N71,000, while a bag of beans is priced between N111,000 and N115,000. To cope with these rising costs against fixed salaries, some residents have reported skipping meals or taking on secondary employment, such as driving taxis, to afford basic necessities.
