The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) continues to pursue regional integration and security despite the departure of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to form the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). While these departures threaten the free movement of goods and people, ECOWAS has maintained its regulatory and security focus. In market regulation, the ECOWAS Regional Competition Authority (ERCA) has issued approximately 30 decisions since October 2024 to prevent dominant firms from disadvantaging small and medium-sized enterprises. In September 2026, the ERCA held its inaugural annual conference in The Gambia, where Commission President General Birame Diop noted that integration requires creating “fair and competitive conditions for all economic operators.” During this event, Gambian Vice-President Muhammed B. S. Jallow announced that land has been allocated for the ERCA to construct its permanent headquarters in The Gambia. Discussions also emphasized harmonizing national laws and regulating strategic sectors like energy and telecommunications to prevent monopolies. Security remains a central priority through partnerships with the United Nations to enhance arms control. Diplomatic efforts to bridge the gap between ECOWAS and the AES have progressed significantly. Following the January 2024 announcement of withdrawal by the AES members, through formal ministerial negotiations commenced in Dakar, Senegal, which commenced on October 17, 2026. Co-chaired by Senegal’s Foreign Minister Cheikh Niang and Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traore, the dialogue aims to establish a cooperation framework based on “good neighborliness, mutual respect, sovereignty, and dignity.” The two blocs agreed to form joint thematic working groups to conduct technical consultations for a formal agreement. This dialogue follows preliminary consultations held On the international stage, Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima met with President Diop during the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in Bamako, Mali, on May 22, 2025. September 2026. Shettima urged ECOWAS leadership to prioritize regional unity and engagement with emerging blocs like the AES, while also emphasizing private sector involvement in the Lagos-Abidjan highway project.
