ECOWAS regional integration initiatives

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has implemented several initiatives aimed at advancing regional integration across economic, digital, and social sectors.

In early August 2026, the ECOWAS Commission hosted a Regional Automotive Industry Development Forum in Abuja, Nigeria. The forum addressed the Regional Automotive Policy Framework, which seeks to increase local vehicle assembly to 50,000 units annually by 2028. Discussions focused on addressing low capacity utilization and reducing the region's reliance on used car imports. Alongside this, ECOWAS conducted training on a new digital platform designed to improve data harmonization and monitoring of regional integration efforts.

By mid-August 2026, integration efforts expanded into healthcare and mobility. In Lomé, Togo, ECOWAS, the West African Health Organisation, and UNOPS facilitated the handover of 30 medical ambulances to improve emergency care and universal health coverage. Additionally, officials conducted community sensitization at the Akanu-Noepe Joint Border Post regarding the Protocol on the Free Movement of Persons, Goods and Services. This initiative targeted the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor to promote trade, investment, and tourism through better public understanding of movement rights and documentation requirements.
