Ecuador-Colombia consular accreditation dispute

Overview

Ecuador’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility denied the accreditation of Elvira de las Mercedes Sanabria Salazar as the First Secretary of the Colombian Consulate in Nueva Loja.

As a result of this decision, the Ecuadorian government canceled the diplomatic visas previously granted to Sanabria Salazar and her husband, Vladimir Fernando Ramírez Sierra. The government cited non-compliance with procedures established by the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations regarding the appointment and admission of consular personnel.

Sanabria Salazar had been appointed by the government of Gustavo Petro to serve in a provisional capacity. The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry noted that the Colombian Embassy may resubmit a corrected accreditation request under the appropriate category and functions to continue the process.
