Ecuador mining sector development and strategy

Overview

In October 2026, the ‘Ecuador País Minero 2026’ forum was convened in Guayaquil to address the nation’s extractive industry, following a significant rise in mining exports during the first quarter of the year.

During the forum, industry leaders and international experts proposed a strategic roadmap focused on promoting legal mining, enhancing mineral traceability, and fostering sustainable development. Xavier Oyola, spokesperson for the RENACE Ecuador Project, advocated for formalizing production through coordinated efforts between the state and academia to provide technical training.

Discussions also highlighted the challenges posed by illegal mining, including environmental liabilities and community impacts. To address economic vulnerabilities, particularly in alluvial mining which is susceptible to flooding, the RENACE initiative suggested utilizing regulated temporary permits to integrate workers and machinery into the formal economy.
