Ecuadorian grain production and import disputes

Overview

In Ecuador, maize producers have threatened to block strategic highways if the government does not halt foreign wheat imports. Members of the Sopracor maize guild argue that cheaper imported wheat is displacing local grain in the animal feed industry. Producers also cited rising costs, including a 120% increase in fuel and an 80% increase in fertilizer, noting that local industry prices fail to cover production expenses.

As the dispute progressed, Ecuadorian farmers met with the Vice Minister of Agricultural Production and Rural Development, Javier Chon, to demand restrictions on import licenses. They requested that licenses for wheat and corn only be granted to companies that can prove they purchase sufficient domestic raw materials. Additionally, producers called for greater transparency regarding transaction and invoicing data to verify industry claims.
