Ecuadorian organized crime violence and military response

Overview

Violence involving organized crime groups in Ecuador has escalated through both gang-related killings and targeted military operations.

In the Quito area, the bodies of two suspected ‘Los Lobos’ gang members, Jeremy Alfredo Jácome Buñay and Kevin Ariel Morales Mosquera, were discovered in a rural sector. Authorities believe the killings resulted from a territorial dispute over drug trafficking routes. One victim, Jácome Buñay, had recently been released from custody following an arrest in August.

Following these incidents, the Ecuadorian military and intelligence forces conducted operations resulting in the capture of high-ranking gang leaders. In Guayas, military forces detained Hermes Ponce, an alias ‘La Muerte,’ who is allegedly linked to Los Lobos and accused of kidnapping, extortion, and assassination. In El Oro, authorities apprehended ‘Negro Félix,’ a leader of the Los Choneros gang, seizing explosives and ammunition. Further arrests in Balzar included suspected Los Choneros members linked to hits and illegal arms trafficking.
