Ecuadorian political candidates face bank account freezes

Overview

Political candidates in Ecuador have reported the freezing of their bank accounts, alleging these measures are forms of political persecution intended to interfere with the 2026 electoral process.

In Guayaquil, mayoral candidate Andrés Roche of the Social Christian Party (PSC) denounced the freezing of his corporate accounts and those of his company representatives. Roche claimed the administrative intervention lacks legal justification and is a tactic to eliminate candidates capable of challenging government-aligned figures. He noted the measure has impacted his businesses' ability to meet obligations to employees and suppliers.

In Manabí, Jaime Estrada Medranda of the Sí Podemos movement also reported frozen accounts, describing the move as “without legal basis” and a coercive tactic to force his withdrawal from the sectional elections. Estrada alleged that the Acción Democrática Nacional (ADN) party orchestrated irregular legal objections to his candidacy, citing formal flaws in documentation and notification errors that hindered his right to a defense.
