Ecuadorian urban mobility developments

In Quito, municipal estimates suggest the expansion of the Metro line from El Labrador to La Ofelia will cost between $500 million and $540 million. The project includes 5.3 kilometers of new tunnels and four additional stations, aiming to connect over 70 northern neighborhoods and benefit approximately 500,000 people by reducing travel times to eight minutes.

The Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) has approved an initial $80 million credit to partially fund the extension. Engineering studies are currently being conducted by the Spanish firm Typsa, with a contract valued at $9.95 million. Final costs will be determined once these studies are completed, which is expected by late October 2026.

Meanwhile, in Guayaquil, the Transit and Mobility Agency (ATM) is enforcing fines for vehicles invading the Metrovía exclusive lanes. A first-time offense carries a fine of $120.50, while repeat offenders face a penalty of $241. The ATM has announced plans to reinforce signaling and conduct socialization efforts, particularly on 25 de Julio Avenue, to clarify lane boundaries for drivers.
