Birmingham-based British band Editors have announced their eighth studio album, titled ‘Surface, Echo & Sound’, via Play It Again Sam Records. The project marks a departure from the electronic experimentation found in their 2022 album, ‘EBM’, moving instead toward a more organic, melodic, and intimate sound. Drummer and founding member Ed Lay noted that the decision to pivot stemmed from several factors, including the unavailability of their previous producer, Blanck Mass. The band recorded in Gloucestershire, focusing on natural instruments and a sound inspired by classic rock records. This new approach incorporates elements such as the mandolin to create a more ‘luminous and emotional sound’ while maintaining the group’s collective energy. The creative process involved the band members playing instruments together in a shared room, utilizing acoustic guitars, mandolin, bass, and drums. Rather than using external producers, guitarist Justin Lockey took on the role of producer. The songwriting began with acoustic sketches from frontman Tom Smith and focused on themes such as the noise of the modern world, friendship, and resilience. The album was scheduled for release released on October 30. Following the release, To celebrate, the band’s work band will be celebrated at headline the Sexto ‘Nplugged event, titled “A ‘A Certain Shade of Dark,” Dark’ event on November 5 at the Mercati Culturali in Pordenone, Italy.
