Editors announce Surface, Echo & Sound album
Overview
Birmingham-based British band Editors have announced their eighth studio album, titled ‘Surface, Echo & Sound’, via Play It Again Sam Records. The project marks a departure from the electronic experimentation found in their 2022 album, ‘EBM’, moving instead toward a more organic, melodic, and intimate sound.
Drummer and founding member Ed Lay noted that the decision to pivot stemmed from several factors, including the unavailability of their previous producer, Blanck Mass. The band recorded in Gloucestershire, focusing on natural instruments and a sound inspired by classic rock records. This new approach incorporates elements such as the mandolin to create a more ‘luminous and emotional sound’ while maintaining the group’s collective energy.
The creative process involved the band members playing instruments together in a shared room, utilizing acoustic guitars, mandolin, bass, and drums. Rather than using external producers, guitarist Justin Lockey took on the role of producer. The songwriting began with acoustic sketches from frontman Tom Smith and focused on themes such as the noise of the modern world, friendship, and resilience.
The album was released on October 30. To celebrate, the band will headline the ‘A Certain Shade of Dark’ event on November 5 at the Mercati Culturali in Pordenone, Italy. Organized by Associazione Culturale Sexto in collaboration with Associazione Casablu, the event is part of the ‘Off the Record 2026’ series, which supports Pordenone’s designation as the Italian Capital of Culture 2027. The program includes a DJ set by Second Sequence and a discussion regarding the band’s musical evolution led by Tom Smith, followed by a collective listening party. The evening also marks the opening of ‘UNFOLDING’, a photography exhibition by Japanese artist Tamaki Yoshida.
