In late July, Governor Monday Okpebholo linked President Tinubu’s economic reforms—especially the removal of fuel subsidies—to stronger state finances. He announced the release of N1 billion to clear pension gratuity arrears for retired ~~local‑government~~ local-government and ~~primary‑school~~ primary-school workers and highlighted several infrastructure projects, including the Ramat Park flyover, the ~~Ekpoma‑Auchi~~ Ekpoma-Auchi highway reconstruction and the extension of the ~~Lagos‑Calabar~~ Lagos-Calabar coastal highway through Edo. A few days later, the National Economic Council’s Implementation Monitoring Committee and major labour unions praised the administration’s progress. They noted the ~~near‑completion~~ near-completion of the Ramat Park Flyover, commended the appointment of John Odior as Executive Chairman of the Edo State Internal Revenue Service, and pointed to improvements such as timely salary payments, regularisation of ~~ad‑hoc~~ ad-hoc staff, office upgrades and a rise in internally generated revenue. Following these developments, the administration has expanded its focus toward education, which the governor has treated as a ‘state of emergency’. Since taking office in November 2024, the administration has prioritized school infrastructure, including the construction of over 100 schools and the rehabilitation of various institutions across the state’s three senatorial districts. Additionally, the governor addressed teacher welfare by approving promotion letters for 8,476 primary and junior secondary school teachers to resolve career progression delays dating back to 2022.
