Edo State House of Assembly leadership crisis

The Edo State House of Assembly underwent a leadership transition following the resignation of Speaker Blessing Agbebaku. The resignation occurred after approximately 17 of the 24 lawmakers signed an impeachment notice, citing allegations of corruption, poor governance, and inflated procurement costs. Yekini Idiaye, a third-term lawmaker, was elected as the new Speaker to support Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration.

Following the initial leadership change, the House formally impeached Agbebaku, arguing that his resignation was not officially documented or presented before his indefinite suspension. In addition to the Speaker, the House removed the Majority Leader and Deputy Majority Leader, appointing Ojiezele Osezua Sunday and Inegbeboh Ojie Eugene as their replacements. The Assembly has directed Agbebaku to return all government property, warning of security agency involvement if he fails to comply.

Concurrently, the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) staged protests at the Assembly complex, opposing proposed legislation that they claim could undermine the financial autonomy of both the judiciary and the legislature. Amidst these tensions, Governor Monday Okpebholo signed the Edo House of Assembly Funds Management Bill 2023 and the State Judiciary Financial Autonomy 2023 Amendment Bill into law. While these measures were intended to prevent the abuse of capital funds, they remain a point of contention for JUSUN. Separately, the Committee of Benin Elders commended the Governor for restoring the Customary Court of Appeal to the state's judicial system.
