Educational and orphan support initiatives in West Africa
Overview
In West Africa, various philanthropic and corporate entities have launched initiatives to provide financial and material support to students and orphans ahead of the academic year.
In Côte d'Ivoire, the Fondation Zakat-Waqf distributed funds to 60 orphans through the Fondation Khaled Ibn Al-Walid, with individual allocations increasing to 120,000 FCFA per child. In Burkina Faso, the Cercle d’études, de recherche et de formation islamiques (CERFI) distributed 36 scholarships totaling 4,530,000 FCFA to vulnerable students across primary, secondary, and higher education levels.
Further support in Burkina Faso was provided by Coris Bank International, which donated 100 million FCFA to the ‘Pupilles de la Nation’ to fund school canteens, university restaurants, and school kits for children of defense and security personnel. Additionally, Coris Assurance Vie donated 200 school kits to students in the commune of Pô. Despite these contributions, booksellers in Ouagadougou reported a slow start to the 2026-2027 school year due to low customer traffic.
