Educational initiatives in Meghalaya

The Meghalaya state government has introduced several educational initiatives aimed at improving student outcomes and skill development.

In late August 2026, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma launched the ‘CM-IMPACT Read & Rise Meghalaya’ programme in Shillong. This initiative, part of the broader CM-IMPACT framework, focuses on establishing universal reading readiness among school children to address learning gaps, particularly in rural and remote districts. The program aims to ensure children above age seven can read within three months and includes the release of a Teacher Training Guide to support these outcomes.

Following this, the administration highlighted the expansion of the SPARK (Programs in Articulation, Resilience, and Kindness) initiative. Designed to prepare youth for technological changes by emphasizing problem-solving and resilience, the program has grown from a 2024 pilot into a larger effort supported by the central Ministry of Education. It has reached over 20,000 students across 53 model campuses and includes specialized residential training for hundreds of teachers.

In early September 2026, during a district talent event in Tura, Chief Minister Sangma further promoted the SPARK initiative, noting that while technology may automate routine tasks, human capabilities like communication and resilience remain indispensable. The program has been recognized as a best practice under the National Education Policy (NEP). Specific updates to the initiative include reaching 12,078 students across 53 benchmark campuses and providing intensive training to 526 educators from 287 schools through the ‘SPARK for Teachers’ component. To assist with classroom implementation, the ‘SPARK for Teachers’ Handbook was also released.
