Edward Brown rape charge in Martha’s Vineyard
Overview
Edward Brown, a 27-year-old security official at Boston Latin Academy, has pleaded not guilty to charges of raping an Irish woman at the Massachusetts State Police barracks in Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard.
The alleged assault occurred on August 15. Prosecutors state the victim met Brown at a local bar before losing consciousness. She reported waking up naked and being restrained by the suspect before fleeing the barracks, where she was eventually found by a passerby.
Investigations revealed that Brown was staying at the barracks as a guest of a state trooper, Ryan Costello. The suspect was identified after a bouncer provided a photograph to the trooper. Prosecutors noted that text messages between the trooper and Brown were not turned over to law enforcement until September 11. During his arraignment, prosecutors also referenced previous harassment complaints filed by Brown’s former partners.
