Egypt national football team preparations
Overview
Egyptian national football teams have begun preparations for upcoming continental qualifiers. The men’s national team, under coach Hossam Hassan, is scheduled to hold a training camp from September 17 to October 6 at the National Teams Center. Their qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations includes matches against Angola in Cairo on September 25 and South Sudan in Juba on September 29, followed by a friendly against South Africa on October 4. Egypt competes in Group B alongside Angola, Malawi, and South Sudan. As of September 20, Mohamed Salah had joined the camp. Ahead of the September 25 fixture at Cairo International Stadium, coach Hassan emphasized a policy shift toward “blooding younger talent,” stating that selection is based on performance rather than reputation. This approach drew controversy on September 24 when Hassan excluded goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy, describing him as “finished” due to a lack of regular club playing time. Hany Abou Rida, President of the Egyptian Football Association, responded by highlighting El Shenawy’s respected history. Following Egypt’s goalless draw against Angola on September 25, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) confirmed that Mohamed Salah would miss the upcoming qualifier against South Sudan on September 29 as a precautionary measure to protect him from injury risks associated with the artificial turf at Juba Stadium. On September 29, Egypt secured a 5-0 victory against South Sudan at Juba Stadium, moving the team to 4 points at the top of Group B. Omar Marmoush scored twice, while Mustafa Ziko, Ibrahim Adel, and 18-year-old Hamza Abdelkarim also scored. Abdelkarim, a substitute for Marmoush, netted his first senior international goal during stoppage time. The match, played on an artificial pitch, saw Rami Rabia assume the captaincy in the absence of Mohamed Salah.
