Egypt continues to expand its transportation infrastructure, focusing on railway modernization and international cooperation. The ministry is executing a plan to complete 33 existing railway workshops and establish 11 new ones, eight of which are already finished. This initiative aims to improve technical security and maintenance for mobile units, including the rehabilitation of 41 EMD locomotives and the development of 100 Henschel locomotives in partnership with the American firm PRL. Maintenance also covers Talgo, VIP, and air-conditioned models, with high-speed Talgo services currently operating on the Cairo-Alexandria and Cairo-Aswan lines. In preparation for the 2026/2027 academic year, Minister of Transport Kamal al-Wazir has inspected Ramses Station to ensure operational readiness, emphasizing passenger services for the elderly and disabled, cleanliness, and strict adherence to safety protocols. On the international stage, Minister of Transport Kamal al-Wazir met with Hungarian transport officials at the Innotrans conference in Berlin to discuss bilateral cooperation in mass transit and green transport. He also engaged with international firms to review critical projects, including discussions with Hitachi Chairman Joseph Marino regarding signaling and control systems for the Alexandria Metro (Abu Qir – Misr Station) project. Furthermore, the ministry is overseeing electromechanical and electrical power upgrades for Cairo Metro Line 1, implemented by an Alstom, Orascom, and Hitachi consortium. Al-Wazir has called for accelerated work rates on these essential infrastructure developments. Parallel to these upgrades, Egypt is developing a massive high-speed electric rail network to integrate passenger and freight transport. The project covers approximately 2,000 kilometers across three major corridors, with plans to expand to a 2,250-kilometer four-line network. This system includes high-speed passenger services reaching 230 km/h, regional trains at 160 km/h, and electric freight locomotives at 120 km/h. The first 660-kilometer line, connecting Ain Sokhna to Marsa Matrouh, is expected to begin commercial service in July 2027, following technical trials in late 2026. The project is being implemented by the National Authority for Tunnels alongside Siemens Mobility, Orascom Construction, and The Arab Contractors.
