Egyptian economic resilience and investment trends
Overview
The Egyptian economy is demonstrating increased resilience against external pressures such as rising oil prices and currency fluctuations. Morgan Stanley reports that recent foreign portfolio outflows have been significantly lower than the divestment levels seen during market shocks earlier in 2026, suggesting growing investor confidence in the nation’s economic policy framework. Economic stability is being supported by strengthened foreign currency sources, including Suez Canal revenues and remittances from citizens abroad. While high yields on local assets like six-month Treasury bills remain attractive to international investors, Morgan Stanley warns that a further 5% to 7% decline in the Egyptian pound could potentially trigger new capital outflows. Additionally, the bank noted that if the Central Bank of Egypt returns to interest rate cuts prematurely, the attractiveness of local assets may diminish. Urban inflation is expected to slow to approximately 11.8% by December. On a broader scale, Egyptian investments across the African continent have reached $14 billion, spanning sectors such as energy, infrastructure, roads, and hospitals. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has corroborated this resilience, noting that the economy has shown a greater capacity to absorb regional geopolitical tensions compared to previous shocks. According to the IMF report, ‘Resilience Under Pressure: The Egyptian Economy Defies Expectations’, exchange rate flexibility and improved reserves have helped absorb capital outflows. The IMF reported real GDP growth of 5% during the third quarter of the 2025/2026 fiscal year. However, the IMF warned that high public debt, financing needs, and the state’s extensive economic role remain risks that could leave Egypt vulnerable if global financing conditions shift. Furthering this outlook, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) reported that the banking sector has maintained high financial resilience through the implementation of supervisory and prudential measures.
