The Elbe River experienced extreme low water levels in early August, with levels in Dresden dropping to approximately 53 cm, significantly below the usual 1.60 m. This drought-like condition halted most cargo traffic and reduced tourist boat trips. The receding waters exposed historic stone markers known as ‘Hungersteine’, which bear warnings such as ‘Wenn du mich siehst, dann weine’ (‘If you see me, weep’) to signal severe food shortages and droughts. By late August, water levels began to rise significantly across Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt due to recent rainfall. In Dresden, the water level reached 128 cm, nearly tripling the low recorded on August 17. Similar increases were noted in Magdeburg and Torgau. While In Magdeburg, the level at the Strombrücke rose to 54 cm from a low of 34 cm, while Torgau saw an increase from 32 to 63 cm.
