Elderly care infrastructure investments in Portugal

Overview

In Portugal, recent developments highlight investments in elderly care infrastructure funded through the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).

In Mafra, a new 4.4 million euro residential facility operated by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Mafra was inaugurated. However, the facility remains unable to begin operations because a formal agreement with the Social Security Institute has not been signed, which prevents the government from subsidizing 48 of its 60 user positions. Minister Maria do Rosário Palma Ramalho described these delays as “normal procedure.”

In Madeira, the Regional Government completed a 1.2 million euro renovation of the Lar do Porto Moniz facility. This PRR-funded project included the requalification of 36 beds and infrastructure. Regional leadership has announced intentions to acquire adjacent land to expand the facility’s capacity by an additional 20 beds.
