Elderly health and safety incidents in South America
Overview
Reports have emerged regarding various incidents involving elderly individuals in Chile and Peru.
In early October, sudden deaths of elderly men were recorded in two separate locations. In Curicó, Chile, a 64-year-old truck driver collapsed at a supermarket and died at the scene despite resuscitation efforts. In Arequipa, Peru, a 69-year-old man suffered a fatal cardiac arrest after playing football.
Later in the month, reports from Peru focused on elderly pedestrians involved in vehicle-related incidents. In Lima, an 82-year-old woman was hospitalized in intensive care with skull and hip fractures following an accident in the Rímac district. In Tacna, a man approximately 70 years old sustained a head injury after falling near a stationary vehicle; investigators are reviewing footage to determine if the incident was a hit-and-run or an accidental fall.
