Elderly service and economic access challenges

Overview

Research indicates that elderly populations in Spain and Ecuador face significant barriers to essential services and economic stability.

In Spain, a study by the Observatorio Social of Fundación la Caixa found that approximately 45% of adults aged 60 to 75 experience difficulty accessing mental health resources. Barriers include social stigma and challenges with telephone helplines and support associations. Within this group, difficulty levels vary by age, with 52% of those aged 60 to 64 reporting complications, compared to 42% for those aged 65 to 69, and 38.7% for those aged 70 to 75. Researchers suggest younger seniors may have higher expectations or greater awareness of these barriers.

Further reports highlight service gaps in Spain, where over half of seniors in rural areas report a lack of specialized attention at banks. While digital banking usage is high at 76.9%, 55.7% of those visiting branches in person claim there is no preferential service, and 62.8% state there is no dedicated staff for their needs.

In Andalusia, the Federation of Andalusian Organizations for the Elderly (FOAM) reported significant delays in dependency care. Data from IMSERSO shows that 98.49% of the 27,110 people on the waiting list in Andalusia have waited more than six months for assessment or aid, a rate that significantly exceeds the national average of 63.22%.

In Ecuador, economic challenges are prominent. An International Labour Organization study shows that 82% of working individuals aged 65 to 75 are employed in the informal sector. Additionally, 44% of older adults in Ecuador lack both labor income and a pension, a gap that is notably wider for women (58.1%) than for men (27.5%).
