Electric bus expansion in Portugal
Overview
Municipalities in Portugal are expanding their electric public transport fleets through investments supported by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
In Oliveira do Hospital, the municipality acquired two 100% electric buses for approximately 898,000 euros to reinforce school transport and decarbonize its fleet. This project included 450,000 euros from the Environmental Fund and the installation of a dedicated charging station.
Following this, the Leiria region announced the introduction of its first interurban electric buses by the end of 2026. This initiative involves 11 fully electric buses through an agreement between the Intermunicipal Community (CIM) and the concessionaire Rodoviária do Lis II. The expansion includes a total investment of over 5.5 million euros, with funding from the CIM and the concessionaire, both partially supported by the PRR. The rollout depends on the completion of a charging station in the Cova das Faias Industrial Zone.
