Electric vehicle battery fire safety warnings
Overview
Authorities in Belgium and Finland are issuing safety warnings regarding the fire risks associated with charging lithium-ion batteries for electric bicycles and scooters.
In Belgium, the FOD Economie has advised e-bike owners against charging batteries overnight to mitigate overheating and fire risks. Recommendations include charging only when a person is present, using manufacturer-recommended chargers, and placing batteries on stable, non-flammable surfaces in well-ventilated areas. Bosch has also suggested storing batteries in dry locations at approximately 20 degrees Celsius.
In Finland, the fire chief of the Varsinais-Suomi Rescue Department, Markus Rautio, highlighted the recurring annual danger of these fires, noting that many near-miss incidents may go unreported. Rautio warned that battery fires burn intensely, release toxic gases, and can eject burning debris. He specifically cautioned against charging batteries near exit routes, such as hallways, which can block escape paths. Some housing companies in the region have responded by implementing charging restrictions or installing specialized charging cabinets.
