Electric vehicle fast charging technology advancements
Overview
Developments in electric vehicle (EV) technology are focusing on reducing charging times through advancements in both battery chemistry and charging infrastructure.
In early August, FAW Group’s Hongqi brand reported that its new battery can charge from 10% to 70% in 3 minutes and 41 seconds, reaching 97% in just over 8 minutes. This performance is supported by a liquid-cooling system and a peak charging rate of 12C. This announcement follows similar claims from industry competitors, including CATL and BYD, as companies race to make ultra-fast charging a mainstream feature.
By late August, the focus expanded to the infrastructure required to support such speeds. Huawei unveiled an ultra-fast charging platform in Munich that claims to add approximately 200 kilometers of range in five minutes. The system utilizes a direct current architecture and integrated battery energy storage to discharge high power without overstressing local electrical grids. This platform includes a closed-loop liquid cooling system and is designed to operate on connections as low as 50 kW.
