Emergency incidents on Corfu island

Overview

The island of Corfu has experienced several emergency incidents involving fire and severe weather.

On September 21, severe storms characterized by heavy rainfall, lightning, and hail caused widespread disruption. The weather led to the flooding of ground-floor apartments in the city center, obstructed traffic via fallen trees, and forced nine aircraft to divert to alternative airports. A lightning strike during these storms ignited a fire on the roof of an apartment building in the Kanoni area, though firefighters contained the blaze without reported injuries.

On September 26, a separate fire occurred at a single-family home in the Kafalomandouko area. The blaze destroyed the kitchen and damaged the tiled roof. Unlike the previous incident, the homeowner sustained burns and required medical transport following treatment by paramedics.
