Emerging global relaxation and travel trends
Overview
New travel and relaxation trends are emerging as individuals seek ways to manage stress and rising temperatures. A global study involving 18,000 participants identified reading as the primary relaxation activity, signaling a preference for solitary, low-screen pastimes.
In the travel sector, a “coolcation” trend is gaining traction, particularly among Serbian tourists, who are opting for cooler climates such as the Dolomites and other Alpine regions to avoid summer heat waves. This is complemented by the rise of ‘soft travel,’ a movement that prioritizes mental recovery over dense itineraries. Influenced by the Italian philosophy of ‘dolce far niente’, or ‘the sweetness of doing nothing’, this approach encourages travelers to focus on being present and finding joy in simple experiences rather than treating rest as a reward for productivity.
Recent data from Poland reflects these shifts toward mountain destinations. In the second half of the summer season, August reservations in Poland increased by 42 percent compared to July, while mountain tourism saw a 57 percent surge, largely driven by last-minute deals. While regional hubs like Łódź report high demand for charter flights to Mediterranean and European destinations, there is also growing interest in rural agrotourism.
However, the summer season has also highlighted safety and regulatory concerns. Authorities in Poland reported 83 drownings in Polish waters, and incidents of rule-breaking in the Tatra National Park, such as unauthorized swimming in mountain streams, have prompted public debate regarding environmental protection and tourist behavior.
