Emil und die Detektive film adaptation release

Overview

The new film adaptation of Erich Kästner’s classic children’s book, ‘Emil und die Detektive’, directed by David Dietl, was released in cinemas on September 24, 2026.

Produced by Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany and UFA, the film modernizes the 1929 story by setting the action in contemporary Berlin. The production incorporates modern elements such as smartphones, AirPods, and e-scooters, and features a cameo by TikTok star Zah1de. The plot follows twelve-year-old Emil Tischbein (Nicholas Jonah Peter), who travels to Berlin to visit his grandmother but is robbed of his money by a fraudster named Max Grundeis (Merlin Sandmeyer) during the train journey. Working with a group of local friends, including Pony (Lara Toni Lüdders) and Gustav (Kilian Kasa), Emil attempts to recover the funds and assist the police.

This production marks the first major adaptation of the literary classic in 25 years. It aims to bridge generations by updating character dynamics, such as including more female characters, while maintaining the core themes of the original work. The film follows a tradition of adaptations dating back to 1931, with previous versions released in 1954 and 2001. Prior to its release, the film held its world premiere in Berlin and received the Gilde-Filmpreis for best children’s film at the 2026 Filmkunstmesse.
