Emilia‑Romagna early school pilot expands
Entities: Daniele Ara · Scuole aperte programme · Imola (city) · Regional education authority of Emilia‑Romagna · Marwa Mahmoud
Overview
The Emilia‑Romagna region’s early‑school experiment, launched in July 2026, continued to attract strong demand. By early August the programme covered 42 municipalities, offering more than 8,000 primary‑school pupils a two‑week session of free recreational and creative activities before the official start of the academic year.
In Reggio Emilia, the regional "Scuole Aperte" pilot began on 31 August, involving fifteen primary schools. The municipality secured a regional grant of €261,589 to fund up to 945 places, of which 189 were reserved for children with disabilities. Schools hosted groups of 15 pupils, each supervised by an educator (with an additional assistant for special‑needs groups), operating weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The first week saw 731 children enrolled, including 59 with disabilities, and a waiting list of 190; the second week added a further 294 waiting‑list spots.
The initiative complements similar efforts in Bologna, Forlì, Imola and other towns, where thousands of families have applied for early‑opening slots and micronido or summer‑camp services. Nationally, the Senate debated a ban on digital devices for children under three, while unions warned of nursery‑access uncertainties in Lucca. Together, these developments underscore a growing emphasis on early‑education access and child‑focused policy across Italy.
