Emko military plant explosion investigation

Overview

An investigation is underway following explosions and a fire at the Emko military plant in Belitsa, Bulgaria. The Gabrovo District Prosecutor’s Office has classified the incident as arson, noting that the explosions caused significant property damage and endangered workers. While Emko management has stated that “human error is excluded as a cause,” investigators have faced delays due to unexploded ammunition.

Recent developments indicate that specialized Ministry of Defense teams are scheduled to conduct controlled detonations of ammunition near the plant on August 28. These operations will occur within a 500-meter radius of the facility, and the national early warning system, “BG-ALERT”, will be activated to notify the public.

To date, experts have located 53 unexploded munitions and over 1,000 kg of metal debris from the destroyed warehouse. Efforts to secure the area have covered 398 decares of the 566 decares of affected forest and agricultural land. Following the initial explosion on August 10, the Mayor of Tryavna, Dencho Minev, extended a partial state of emergency for the area, which is now set to remain in effect until September 13.

As the investigation progresses, Western intelligence sources have suggested the incident may be linked to Russian sabotage targeting European defense manufacturers through hybrid warfare. Bulgarian political figures have labeled the explosion a “significant national security threat,” calling for parliamentary hearings to address the prevention of such threats.
