Empowerment and vocational training in Nigeria

Empowerment and vocational training initiatives in Nigeria have focused on economic self-reliance for vulnerable groups and gender inclusion.

In August 2026, programs in Oyo and Ondo states targeted specific demographics through skill acquisition. In Oyo, the NGO ‘Enable Oyo’ provided employability training to forty young persons with disabilities. In Ondo, the Jummy I Care Foundation invested over N200 million to provide vocational training and start-up equipment to approximately 600 women, covering skills such as ICT and craft making to foster long-term economic independence.

By September 2026, efforts expanded toward broader social and political integration. In Ogun State, the government implemented a women’s development strategy through the Nigeria for Women Project, reportedly empowering approximately 100,000 women and establishing thousands of Women Affinity Groups. Meanwhile, in Ondo State, leadership retreats focused on gender inclusion in governance, with officials noting a record number of female permanent secretaries in the state administration.
