End of World War II and Japanese surrender

Overview

The end of World War II was initiated by Emperor Hirohito’s decision to accept the Allied surrender offer, despite internal opposition and a coup attempt led by Major Kenji Hatanaka. This decision led to massive public celebrations in the United States, exemplified by the iconic ‘Kissing Sailor’ photograph in Times Square.

Following the decision, Japanese officials signed an unconditional surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. Under the terms of the Potsdam Declaration, Japan agreed to end hostilities, release prisoners of war, and acknowledge the authority of the US Supreme Commander. While Emperor Hirohito was to remain a symbolic head of state, US forces began landing in Tokyo Bay to establish an occupation presence.
