Energy transition in Cuenca healthcare facilities

Overview

The Castilla-La Mancha Health Service (SESCAM) is implementing various decarbonization and energy transition initiatives across healthcare facilities in Cuenca, Spain.

Initially, the Integrated Care Management of Cuenca received recognition for its “Urban Health Center Network: Zero Emissions Energy Transition 2028” plan. This initiative focuses on transforming urban health centers toward a zero-emissions thermal model by 2028 through methods such as connecting to sustainable forest biomass networks, installing high-temperature heat pumps, and utilizing photovoltaic self-consumption systems. Notable progress includes replacing diesel boilers at the Cuenca III Health Center and establishing an operational self-consumption system at the Cuenca IV Health Center.

Following these efforts, the Hospital de Cuenca has moved toward expanding its renewable energy capacity by initiating the procurement of technical assistance for a photovoltaic solar installation. This project involves installing solar canopies over parking facilities to generate electricity for the hospital’s direct self-consumption, providing both renewable power and covered parking for vehicles.
