EnerVenue battery production relocation to China

Overview

American battery startup EnerVenue has transitioned its manufacturing focus to China, opting to launch mass production of its nickel-hydrogen batteries in Changzhou rather than building its initial facility in Kentucky, USA. CEO Henning Rath attributed this shift to the established industrial ecosystem in Changzhou, which provides a dense cluster of suppliers and engineers necessary for rapid engineering iterations.

Following this move, the company commenced high-volume production of its Aqueous Metal Cell (AMC) technology at a facility in Wujin, China. The AMC technology is a water-based, nickel-hydrogen chemistry—previously utilized in the Hubble Space Telescope and the International Space Station—redesigned with lower-cost materials for terrestrial use. The cells are engineered for extreme longevity, designed to withstand 30,000 charge and discharge cycles with a projected lifespan of 30 years.

The company has launched what it describes as the ‘world’s first large-scale production line’ for these cells. The initial phase of the production facility has a nominal capacity of 250 MWh per year, with an aim to reach a daily output of approximately 300 fourth-generation cells. EnerVenue intends to scale production to 1 GWh by 2027 and several gigawatt-hours annually by 2028. EnerVenue has already secured its first multi-megawatt-hour commercial order for 26 Energy Prism containers, totaling 11 MWh, for an oilfield company in northern China.
