Environmental and agricultural climate adaptation in Cundin_

In Cundinamarca, Colombia, regional authorities have introduced several measures to address climate variability and environmental sustainability.

Initially, the local government launched a pilot parametric insurance program designed to protect 521 small-scale agricultural producers in the municipalities of Villapinzón, Sesquilé, and Suesca from water scarcity caused by the El Niño phenomenon. This model, supported by FINAGRO, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the German Embassy, and the UNDP, provides automatic funds when specific climate indicators are met to mitigate drought impacts.

Subsequently, the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Cundinamarca (CAR) expanded environmental efforts through conservation agreements in Manta. These agreements aim to reduce human-wildlife conflict between farmers and the Andean bear by promoting sustainable practices like meadow renewal and the installation of water troughs. Furthermore, the CAR introduced a ‘Climate Preparation Route Strategy’ to encourage efficient water use and urge citizens to evaluate their water footprint to protect regional aquatic ecosystems.
