Environmental and infrastructure issues in Playa del Carmen
Overview
Playa del Carmen has faced several environmental and structural challenges. In mid October, heavy rainfall caused flooding in neighborhoods such as 28 de Julio, Villamar 1, and Ejido. Residents linked the flooding to clogged storm drains and inadequate drainage maintenance. During this period, the abandoned Agua Azul hotel experienced a partial roof collapse, damaging two ground floor businesses, though no injuries occurred.
By early November, the region reported significant coastal erosion. An 800 meter stretch of coastline between 10th and 14th streets saw sand loss exceeding 30 meters in certain areas. This erosion has allowed waves to reach nearby structures and has impacted pedestrian access and the local tourist experience. The presence of sargassum has also been noted to affect water quality.
