Environmental management and pollution in Mersin

Overview

The Mersin Metropolitan Municipality introduced ‘Çevresin’, a mobile application designed to facilitate citizen reporting of environmental and climate-related issues. Developed under a climate change adaptation project, the app includes a ‘Yeşil Uyarı’ (Green Alert) feature that allows residents to submit photographs and location data to help municipal units detect air, water, and soil pollution.

Concurrently, the Mersin Nature and Environment Association has issued warnings regarding severe pollution and health risks in the region. The association reported that recycling facilities in the Yalınayak and Şeyh Sümer neighborhoods are causing health crises, including an increase in cancer cases, due to smoke exposure. Additionally, concerns were raised that a significant portion of imported plastic waste is being discarded into sewage lines, streams, or forests rather than being recycled.
